Mission Provides Over 144,000 Bottles for Free Clinic
For over seven years, a small and dedicated group of women at the Vinton Presbyterian Church have been on a mission to support medical treatment for the poor. They do it in a small way that has added up to a big difference in the area. Through the collection of used pill bottles, the group has provided over 144,000 cleaned bottles for reuse through a free clinic in Cedar Rapids.
Weed Week: Extension to offer series of meetings on herbicides
Farmers and agribusiness representatives will benefit from Weeds Week, a weeklong series of informational meetings focusing on herbicides and their effectiveness. The half-day sessions will be held Aug. 3-7 at five Iowa State University research farms across the state and hosted by Iowa State University Extension and Outreach field agronomists.
Shellsburg Backdraft 5K set for Saturday
The Shellsburg Fire Department Auxiliary's annual Backdraft 5K takes place this Saturday. The race begins at 8 a.m. at the Shellsburg park.
Registration fee is $25. Email Shellsburgfireaux@gmail.com for a form, or register at the park that morning. Checks can be made payable to Shellsburg Firemen’s Auxiliary. Mail form and check to Meri Mott, P.
RC 'Warbirds' event to benefit Honor Flight; free admission
Warbirds Over Iowa, a remote-controlled air show sponsored by the Cedar Rapids Skyhawks, take place from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. Saturday, July 18 (Rain date July 19). The event is a fund-raiser for the Eastern Iowa Honor Flight. Admission is free for spectators; Hy-Vee wil over lunch and spectators will have a chance to donate.
The Skyhawks who have been in existence since 1962.

Concert series to include Zachary Freedom, Strait Run
Vinton Unlimited is sponsoring two summer concerts on Thursday nights. We invite all residents to visit the Farmers Market at the depot, shop downtown and then come to the park for music and relaxation. Bring your lawn chair or blanket!
Concerts scheduled include:
July 9 – Zach Freedom @ 6:30 in Celebration Park. Hesson Properties will provide hot dogs, chip & water while supplies last.
Softball tourney benefit set for Deanne Halstead, July 11
Deanne Halstead was recently diagnosed with breast cancer and had surgery several weeks ago. She will now need to go through chemotherapy.
Her family is sponsoring a fundraiser/softball tournament on Saturday July 11 at the Vinton Lions Field between 11:00-2:00.
There will be grilled brats, pork burgers, snow cones, popcorn, baked goods, and drinks available to purchase at the field.
Farm Credit Services to help at Garrison farm safety event
Attendees of the 3rd Annual Kid’s Health & Safety Fair will learn about farm safety starting at 2 p.m. on Saturday, July 11. Ally Schultes, Farm Credit Services of America (FCSAmerica) outreach coordinator, will talk about ATV and tractor safety. Schultes partners with Garrison Emergency Services for this event.
According to the National Safety Council, agriculture is the nation’s most dangerous industry.
VU golf tournament set for July 10; two-person best shot
Get your friends and grab your clubs for the annual Vinton Unlimited Country Club on Friday, July 10 at the Vinton Country Club!
New to 2015, the tournament will be a two-person best shot with tee times at 2 and 5pm. Registration is only $20 per person and there will be three teams per hole.
Flight payouts will go to top golfers, and stake prizes will be offered.
